September: Fall Fare

Old is new and new is old. Vintage lovers have history on their side: we appreciate the aged beauty of vintage and antiques. History often means used and loved, and thus a wonderful, old item is in the hands and heart of a new owner. Seeing what has been used/purchased in the past is an insight into buyers' eyes. It gives us clues about what were once trends, what people once desired. It's also fun to imagine why someone was attracted to a certain, special piece.

The following vintage items were all sold on Etsy in August, 2012:

Fish Plates, Gold Flecks from TwoStoryVintage

A Member in the Circle of Eve

No rhyme, no reason for who gets circled here, but keep eyes and ears open as every EveTeam member, and other Etsy shopkeepers, will be in the spot light of the Circle of Eve. Thom Aten, EtsyVintageElite team member, tells us about his passion for vintage. His shop name is Circa810, and his last name is pronounced like the two numbers, 8,10. Clever.

About Thom's love for aviation.
I have too many aviation collectibles!  One of my favorites is a TWA Passenger Service Kit. It's a beautiful, brown, leather trimmed, boxy type suitcase used in the early days of commercial flights. Brass clip closures on the front, and a sturdy, leather handle on top. The stewardess, as they were called back then, used these so called "catering boxes" to tote food and other passenger service goods on board. With all my vintage aviation items, I use this streamlined, sturdy catering box to hold many of my cherished items. When I get tired of one thing, it goes in the box and something else comes out. I guess I use it like a safe for those items I can't part with. This box bridges my love of vintage, aviation, and the affection I have for the dear friend who gave me this treasured piece. I like looking at this box when I day dream of what flying was all about years ago.

A note on Thom's memory, and an item now long gone.
This is kind of silly, but one vintage item I don't have any more is an old Folgers coffee can, and I wish I had it. It belonged to my father, and it rested on his work bench, and it sat there for my entire life. It was filled with broken pencils and pens, and an old green grease pencil with a red top sticking out of the can. I gave it to someone years ago, and I wish I had it today. It still holds such sentimental value. So I say to people, hang on to your special pieces, they hold such wonderful memories, and nothing can take their place.

Honored... that is the one word that comes to mind. I told Maggie of Hilltop Times I would be commenting on this because this has been so motivational for me to know that what I am doing is being noticed by others. I remember growing up "Vintage" was almost a dirty word and it was something that you tried to get rid of... times have changed! The interview with Maggie was unreal, she is so funny not to mention just a delight to chat with. I look forward to reading about other sellers and how they got to where they are in life... Thanks again Maggie!! oops, one other thing, the new look is more than fabulous!

Thank you for including my mini pillow sachet here! I have many favorites when it comes to pillows and blankets ~ all of which have been handmade by one of my beloved kinswomen or fellow creatives. Knowing that someone toiled to bless our family makes it precious!

Thanks Maggie for including my chair in this fantastic post. Hmm...my favorite chair, I am sorry to say it is not vintage to be honest. My favorite chair is a comfy white slipcover chair chair that sits in my sun-room and brought me through 6 months of a very sick pregnancy and now it serves me every morning with my coffee for my quiet time before my little boys wake up. I cherish my time in that chair:)

Love the new blog!
It's true that I would rather have vintage things around me than new. My favorite chair was in this old house when we moved in. It's a spindle back wood arm chair, and it's just right for me to sit at my beading desk. My most treasured blanket is a quilt my great grandmother made for me. It's falling apart, but that doesn't matter. I still love it.

Love it! So much great information. I have a old 1940s club chair that I love and a barrel shape or John Wayne chair we got at auction. I so rather have vintage then new. I really hate shopping new retail.

Wonderful Blog Thank you Maggie

I guess my favorite chair is the one in front of my pc. It's a thrift store find, it's big roomy and swivels and rocks. To this day my kids 12 & 13 climb in it with me and we chat

Maggie - you have the vintage gift! My favorite chair had gold upholstery and wooden legs. I have a photo me and my older brother Joe sitting on our mother's lap. We barely fit - but that was ok! I took all my naps in that chair. xxoo

Great reads and beautifully presented. A pleasure.
My favorite chair is a simple wooden farmhouse chair. It was an antique when given to my parents over 50 years ago. They were just starting out and were glad to have any chairs. Later I used in on the frozen pond, pushing it around and keeping my balance while learning to skate. Today it sits in a corner holding memories and a very old Christmas cactus.
Thanks Maggie!
